NAWEC, as the Implementing Entity for the Gambia Water and Sanitation Project (WASAP — P513113), hereby publishes the following Environmental and Social documents for public disclosure in accordance with World Bank Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs).
Public Disclosure Notice
These documents are published by NAWEC in fulfilment of its disclosure obligations under the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) and the Environmental and Social Commitment Plan (ESCP) for the Gambia Water and Sanitation Project (WASAP — P513113). Members of the public and affected stakeholders are invited to review these documents and submit feedback through NAWEC’s Grievance Redress Mechanism.
Project Background
The Gambia Water and Sanitation Project (WASAP — P513113) is financed by the International Development Association (IDA), World Bank Group. The Republic of The Gambia is the Recipient and NAWEC is the Project Implementing Entity.
The Project’s main development objective is to increase access to reliable water supply and improve sanitation services in The Gambia. It includes infrastructure development across water production, treatment, distribution, and sanitation components, with a strong commitment to environmental and social safeguards throughout implementation.
NAWEC is required to implement the Project in accordance with World Bank Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs) and the Environmental and Social Commitment Plan (ESCP) agreed between the Republic of The Gambia, NAWEC, and the World Bank.

This ESCP sets out the material measures and actions that the Republic of The Gambia and NAWEC shall carry out during implementation of the Gambia Water and Sanitation Project (P513113), in accordance with World Bank Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs). It defines timeframes, institutional arrangements, staffing, training, monitoring, reporting, and grievance management requirements. The ESCP is a binding part of the Financing Agreement between the World Bank (IDA) and the Republic of The Gambia.

This draft Resettlement Policy Framework (RPF) sets out the principles, policies, and procedures to be followed in the event that project activities under the Gambia Water and Sanitation Project (P513113) result in involuntary resettlement, loss of assets, or restriction of access to resources. It is prepared in accordance with World Bank Environmental and Social Standard 5 (ESS5) on Land Acquisition, Restrictions on Land Use and Involuntary Resettlement, and provides the framework for preparing site-specific Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs) as required during project implementation.

Fecal Sludge Treatment — Kotu
Construction of a Fecal and Sludge Treatment Plant in Kotu to improve sanitation infrastructure and faecal sludge management in the Greater Banjul Area.
“NAWEC shall implement the Project in accordance with the Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs) and the Environmental and Social Commitment Plan (ESCP), in a manner acceptable to the World Bank. The ESCP is a part of the Financing Agreement between the Republic of The Gambia and the International Development Association.”
