Safe Water for All
NAWEC is responsible for the production, treatment, and distribution of safe drinking water across urban and peri-urban areas of The Gambia. Our water supply infrastructure serves over 93,000 customer accounts, providing clean water to homes, businesses, and public institutions.
Through partnerships with international development agencies, NAWEC continues to expand and modernise its water infrastructure, improve service reliability, and extend coverage to underserved communities.
Water Sources
NAWEC abstracts water primarily from underground aquifers through a network of boreholes and production wells.
- Borehole Systems — Deep and shallow boreholes tapping into The Gambia's underground water resources
- Production Wells — High-yield wells in the Greater Banjul Area and provincial centres
- Surface Water — Potential for future surface water abstraction from the River Gambia
Treatment & Quality
Water quality and safety are paramount. NAWEC operates treatment facilities and conducts regular testing to ensure compliance with standards.
- Treatment Plants — Chlorination and filtration facilities ensuring safe drinking water
- Water Quality Labs — Regular testing for bacteriological and chemical parameters
- WHO Standards — Compliance with World Health Organisation drinking water guidelines
- Continuous Monitoring — Systematic quality checks from source to customer tap
Distribution Network
An extensive pipeline network delivers treated water from production and storage facilities to customers across served areas.
- Transmission Mains — Large-diameter pipelines connecting treatment to distribution
- Storage Reservoirs — Elevated and ground-level tanks ensuring consistent pressure and supply
- Distribution Mains — Network of pipes delivering water to individual connections
- Network Expansion — Ongoing extension of pipelines to new developments and underserved areas
Greater Banjul Area Water Supply (WASIB)
The Water and Sanitation Investment Programme for Banjul (WASIB) is a major infrastructure project funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) aimed at significantly improving water supply in the Greater Banjul Area.
The project includes new boreholes, treatment facilities, storage infrastructure, and distribution network rehabilitation to improve water pressure, reliability, and quality for Greater Banjul residents.
