Powering National Development
NAWEC is responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity across The Gambia. Our electricity infrastructure serves over 355,000 customer accounts, powering homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, and government institutions.
Through significant investments in generation capacity, grid modernisation, and renewable energy integration, NAWEC is working to deliver reliable, affordable electricity and achieve universal access by 2025 under its Cabinet-approved Strategic Roadmap.
Thermal Generation
Heavy fuel oil (HFO) and light fuel oil (LFO) power plants form the backbone of NAWEC's generation capacity.
- Kotu Power Station — Located in the Greater Banjul Area, one of NAWEC's primary generation facilities
- Brikama Power Station — Major generation hub serving the West Coast Region and Greater Banjul Area
- Provincial Stations — Distributed generation facilities serving Basse, Farafenni, Soma, Bansang, and other regional centres
Power Imports (OMVG)
The OMVG (Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du fleuve Gambie) interconnection enables cross-border power trade.
- 225kV Transmission Line — Kaolack (Senegal) to Soma and Brikama substations in The Gambia
- 150 MW Import Capacity — Significant capacity to supplement domestic generation
- SENELEC PPA — 50MW power purchase agreement with Senegal's national utility
- Regional Integration — Part of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) framework
Renewable Energy
NAWEC is expanding renewable energy capacity as part of its long-term sustainability and universal access goals.
- Solar PV Development — Grid-scale solar photovoltaic projects under development
- IPP Partnerships — Independent Power Producer frameworks for private renewable investment
- Mini-Grids — Solar-powered mini-grid solutions for off-grid rural communities
- Target — Significant increase in renewable share of the national energy mix by 2030
High Voltage Transmission
225kV and 33kV transmission lines connecting generation sources to distribution substations across the country.
Distribution Network
Medium and low voltage distribution networks delivering power to end-users in urban, peri-urban, and rural areas.
Metering Systems
Both prepaid and postpaid metering options, with ongoing rollout of smart prepaid meters for improved service.
Grid Modernisation
Ongoing infrastructure upgrades to reduce losses, improve reliability, and expand coverage to underserved areas.
Universal Access Programme
NAWEC's Strategic Roadmap 2021–2040 sets an ambitious target of universal electricity access by 2025. The programme involves massive grid extension into previously unserved communities across all regions of The Gambia.
Major electrification inaugurations across 719 communities were completed under President Barrow's nationwide inauguration programme, significantly advancing The Gambia's goal of universal electricity access.
Electricity Generation Growth (2017–2026)
Annual generation output in MWh, showing consistent year-on-year growth as NAWEC expands capacity to meet rising demand.
