The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) was established in June 1996 under the Companies Act of 1955 as a Public Limited Liability Company. NAWEC is mandated for the provision of electricity, water, and sewerage services across The Gambia.

NAWEC succeeded the Gambia Utilities Corporation (GUC), established by an act of parliament in 1972, and the Utilities Holding Corporation (UHC), established in 1992. The electricity, water, and sewerage assets are owned by the Government of The Gambia but managed and operated by NAWEC.

Under its strategic roadmap, NAWEC is committed to achieving universal electricity access and ensuring reliable, affordable utility services for all citizens, supported by major investments in infrastructure modernization and renewable energy.

Electricity

NAWEC generates, transmits, and distributes electricity across The Gambia through thermal power plants, imported power via the OMVG interconnection, and growing renewable energy capacity.

  • Thermal generation at Kotu, Brikama, and provincial stations
  • 225kV OMVG transmission line (Kaolack–Soma–Brikama)

Water Supply

NAWEC is responsible for the treatment, distribution, and supply of safe drinking water across urban and peri-urban areas of The Gambia.

1972

Gambia Utilities Corporation (GUC)

Established by an Act of Parliament to manage the country's electricity and water supply services.

1992

Utilities Holding Corporation (UHC)

Created by Presidential Executive Order. UHC entered into a leasing contract with SOGEA/MSG to operate and manage utility assets.

1995

Return to Public Management

The SOGEA/MSG management arrangement was terminated, returning operational responsibility to UHC.

1996

NAWEC Established

The National Water and Electricity Company was incorporated under the Companies Act as a Public Limited Liability Company, succeeding UHC.

2015

First Electricity Roadmap

Development of The Gambia's first strategic electricity sector roadmap, establishing a blueprint for short-to-medium term development.

2021

Strategic Roadmap 2021–2040

Cabinet-approved strategic roadmap targeting universal electricity access by 2025, with long-term planning through 2040. Financed by the World Bank.

2022

SENELEC Power Purchase Agreement

Signed a landmark PPA with Senegal's SENELEC for 50MW of imported electricity through the OMVG interconnection at Soma and Brikama substations.

2025

Universal Access Target

Major electrification inaugurations across 719 communities. President Barrow concludes nationwide inauguration programme, advancing universal electricity access.
