Full Story
On Wednesday, 28th October 2026, NAWEC signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Soliaris Africa Ltd. (Mark Cables FZE) for the development of the Soma Solar Park Phase II Project, a landmark renewable energy initiative valued at US$169 million.
The project will deliver 148.44 MWp of solar photovoltaic generation capacity supported by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), strengthening The Gambia’s electricity generation and grid reliability. The signing ceremony took place at the Office of the President, with the signing observed by the President.
Speaking at the ceremony, NAWEC Managing Director Gallo Saidy described the project as a defining moment for the utility and a major step toward a more sustainable and secure energy future.
The Soma Solar Park Phase II Project forms part of ongoing efforts to diversify The Gambia’s energy mix, expand renewable energy generation, and support the country’s long-term economic and social development goals.
Why Battery Storage Matters
A key feature of the project is its battery component, comprising a 50 MW / 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System. It allows solar energy generated during daylight hours to be stored and dispatched during peak demand periods, particularly in the evening and at night when solar generation is unavailable, helping to improve electricity availability and support more efficient management of the national power system. The project is also expected to reduce NAWEC’s dependence on higher-cost electricity sources, contributing to a lower cost of supply.
