The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to workplace health, safety, and environmental compliance with the successful nomination and training of 100 Departmental HSE Champions across the organisation. The initiative, led by NAWEC Management through the Health and Safety (HSE) Department, is aimed at strengthening HSE enforcement at departmental level and embedding a sustainable, organisation-wide culture of safety awareness and responsibility.

A Phased and Strategic Training Approach

The capacity-building programme was delivered over four carefully structured training days — 7th, 8th, 9th and 14th April 2026 — using a phased approach designed to build knowledge progressively and ensure maximum impact.

Phase 1  ·  Days 1–3
7th – 9th April 2026
Dedicated to Departmental Representatives, focusing on foundational HSE knowledge and departmental roles in safety enforcement across the organisation.
Phase 2  ·  Day 4
14th April 2026
Reserved exclusively for the designated Departmental HSE Champions — consolidating learning and strengthening leadership, coordination, and implementation responsibilities.

Equipping Departments for Effective HSE Enforcement

The training programme covered a broad range of practical and policy-driven topics essential to maintaining a safe work environment. Sessions were highly interactive, combining presentations, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations to ensure participants were well prepared to apply HSE principles in their respective departments.

Strong Engagement and Positive Feedback

The training was well received by participants, with trainees commending the relevance, clarity, and practicality of the sessions. Feedback from across departments highlighted the programme as timely and critical to addressing workplace safety challenges that affect staff at every level of the organisation.

According to the NAWEC HSE Team, the phased training structure and high level of participation are expected to significantly strengthen sustainability in HSE enforcement, as trained champions take active ownership of safety standards within their departments.

The programme was graced by the presence of NAWEC’s senior leadership, including the Managing Director, the Human Resource Team, and the Group Corporate Services Director. In their opening and engagement remarks, management emphasised that Health, Safety, and Environment is a core organisational priority — not a compliance exercise — and that safety is the responsibility of every individual within the institution.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility. We urge our newly trained Departmental HSE Champions to embrace their roles positively and to serve as role models within their units.”

Champions at the Centre of a Safer NAWEC

Following the final session on 14th April 2026, the Departmental HSE Champions were formally positioned to work closely with the HSE Department in implementing and supporting safety initiatives across the organisation. Through collaboration, regular reporting, and continuous engagement, the champions are expected to play a critical role in strengthening NAWEC’s internal HSE network.

Key Responsibilities of Departmental HSE Champions

  • Implementing and supporting HSE initiatives within their respective departments
  • Monitoring compliance with NAWEC HSE policies and procedures
  • Promoting safety awareness and a culture of responsibility among colleagues
  • Identifying and reporting potential workplace hazards and risks

A Shared Commitment to Health and Safety

The Departmental HSE Champions Programme represents a significant milestone in NAWEC’s drive to protect its employees, assets, and operations. By empowering staff at departmental level, the institution is building the internal capacity needed to sustain HSE standards across all units — reducing risk, improving accountability, and creating a workplace where safety is not an afterthought but a shared value.

NAWEC remains committed to investing in its people and advancing its vision of a safe, healthy, and sustainable working environment for all.
