Date: 11th–13th December 2025
The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) is honored to host a high‑level delegation from SENELEC, Senegal’s national electricity company, from 10th to 13th December 2025. This visit marks a significant milestone in strengthening regional cooperation and advancing energy integration between The Gambia and Senegal.
On 11th December, NAWEC’s Managing Director formally welcomed the delegation on behalf of the Government of The Gambia. In his remarks, he emphasized the strong cultural and historical ties between the two nations and reaffirmed NAWEC’s commitment to:
- Innovation and reliability in electricity and water services
- Sustainability and community development across The Gambia
- Regional collaboration to drive progress and resilience
Building on a Strategic Partnership
The relationship between NAWEC and SENELEC is central to cross‑border electricity supply. In March 2022, NAWEC signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SENELEC, enabling the importation of 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity through the Soma and Brikama OMVG substations. This agreement has delivered:
- More secure and reliable power supply for the Greater Banjul Area (GBA)
- Reduced generation costs (approximately $0.15/kWh)
- Increased revenue and improved service delivery
- A stronger foundation for universal energy access in The Gambia
With the completion of the 225kV OMVG transmission line from Kaolack–Soma–Brikama, NAWEC now has the capacity to import up to 150MW, ensuring sufficient power to meet growing demand.
Looking Ahead
This visit provides an opportunity to deepen collaboration, explore new avenues for partnership, and reinforce NAWEC’s turnaround program. Supported by partners such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, Kuwaiti Fund, and OMVG, NAWEC continues to invest in infrastructure upgrades and distribution network expansion to deliver stable electricity nationwide.
Closing Note
“Together with SENELEC and our international partners, NAWEC is building a brighter, more sustainable future for The Gambia. This visit reflects our shared vision of regional integration, energy security, and community empowerment.”
